The difference is that myoglobin binds oxygen more tightly than hemoglobin, but why have both? Infants developing in the womb use myoglobin while mothers (and the rest of us) use hemoglobin. Since myoglobin in the infant can bind oxygen more tightly than the hemoglobin of their mother, the oxygen can flow into the unborn child.</image:caption>
